A common misconception is that you have to pass your theory test before you can start to take driving lessons. This is not the case and here at DAVID ATKINSON SCHOOL OF MOTORING you will receive theory training along side your practical lessons. However you cannot apply for the practical driving test until you have passed your theory test.
What does the test cover?
The theory test is made up of two parts, a multiple choice part and the hazard perception part. You need to pass both parts to pass the theory test.
Part one - multiple choice.
Before the test starts you will be given instructions on how the test works. You can choose to go through a practice session to get used to the layout of the test and how it works. ( Recommended ).
A question and several answer options will appear on the screen and you select the correct answer by touching the screen. Read the question carefully some require more than one answer.
You will be asked a series of 50 questions in 57 minutes and the pass mark required is 43/50.
After the multiple choice part you can have a three minute break.
Part two - Hazard Perception.
You will be shown a short tutorial video clip about how the hazard perception test works.
The test is also delivered on a computer but you respond by clicking on the mouse.
You will be shown a series of 14 clips that feature everyday road scenes. In each clip there is at least one developing hazard but keep concentrating as one of the clips will feature two.
To achieve a high score you will need to respond early to the developing hazard. The maximum you can score on each clip is 5.
The pass mark required is 44/75
At the end of the test.
At the end of the test you will be asked to answer a number of survey questions. You do not have to answer these questions.
Once you leave the examination room you will be given the result by the test centre staff, including feedback.
